Veteran's Day

We had a busy day. Caught a bus to Rockefeller Center and admired ice skaters and all the USA flags. Then bought tickets to Top of the Rock. I was so proud when the boys kept asking, "where's king kong? Where Kong King?" when they saw the empire state building. Played in the light room. I have to say that room has such a better impact at night but the kids loved it regardless. Went down stairs and ate a packed lunch and watched the ice skaters. Long Hair had a complete screaming fit the entire lunch break because he wanted to go skating. Nothing I could do would help him stop carrying on and on. The other two were content to watch the skaters and eat their lunch. Somehow, a trip the Anthropologie got him out of his bad mood. I bought a 2011 calendar with bees on it and two spools of braided material for $8. I plan on using it for garland for my Christmas tree. When we walked out, we heard a parade so we walked over to St. Patrick's cathedral to watch the veterans and various marching bands pass. Even saw a massive amercian Flag from ground zero. It was as wide as a four laned road and almost a half of block long. After watching the parade for 13 minutes, the kids demanded ice cream. Enter short hairs tantrum. While it only took us a block and a half to find it, you would have thought it was in Brooklyn by the bellyaching Short Hair did. While we were eating ice cream, Long Hair suddenly realized he wanted ice cream on a stick, not on a cone. Enter Long Hair tantrum. A woman reading a book looked at me an said, "well that isn't very peaceful!" I said, "this is a public place, mam. I'm giving my kid ice cream, I'm trying my best.". She said, "I'm moving. I'm moving." and she did. And then I knew it was time to go home. Traffic was horrible because of the parade so I decided not to take a cab or bus, and got into the closest subway I could find. Enter Short Hairs trantrum. He wanted to ride the school bus. I was literally dragging him down the street and into the subway station. When we got out of the subway,it was a beautiful warm autumn day. Dot spotted a playground and suggested we go.the boys seemed up for it, so I said yes. And when we were their we spotted three moms from church. With kids my kids age. And so we played with them for the rest of the day. Caught a cab home, heated up some fish sticks. And called it a night. But then a surprise visit from Uncle Nick thrilled the kids. And I left for an extremely uninspiring trip to Bed Bath and Beyond to buy a trash can. But before I went home, I sat in Starbucks and drank some hot chocolate. Alone without my iPhone. Which was so needed.

  1. That must have been the most you've ever written in any post! LOL Loved it! I just want to tell you that I so admire you! I love that you get out there and do stuff with your kids no matter how many tantrums they throw! These life experiences that you do with your kids are the best learning experiences you can do for them! I love your honesty too...I get a kick out of it! I have two boys, not twins, but two rowdy boys, so I can totally relate sometimes!

  4. tangent: at my father's viewing when he passed away, my toddler niece was tired and cranky and acting out. My sister at first tried to control the behavior but realized that we were all emotional, wasn't her little daughter allowed to be too? A few people commented about how it wasn't an appropriate place for that type of behavior. So my sister whipped around and said something like, "This is my FATHER's viewing and this is HIS GRANDDAUGHTER. If you came to pay respects, then you need to respect his entire family, including his youngest grandchild." Then she looked over to her daughter, who was playing with the funeral flowers and said loudly, "Sydney, you keep doing whatever you want. Your grandpa LOVES YOU SO MUCH."

    I was so proud.
